“I first met Bernard by chance while running on the trails behind Nelson. Our paths crossed, we stopped for a chat, and he told me he was training for the UTMB. Even though I was a complete stranger, he generously shared advice. I carried on my run from that brief encounter feeling inspired and uplifted. Months later, purely by coincidence Bernard started working at the same place as me. Around that time, I had signed up for the South Island Ultra Marathon, my first ever 100km race, having only run 54km previously. I asked Bernard if he could help me with a training plan, as I’d never followed one before. He had just completed his coaching certification but hadn’t officially launched his services yet. Despite that, he put together a three-month training programme for me, and didn’t charge a cent. I was blown away by his generosity. The structure and discipline of the programme were exactly what I needed, and I had fun with it! A training programme keeps you accountable. Until then, I’d been winging it with no real understanding of race nutrition or proper training. I was skeptical about relying solely on gels and Tailwind for fuel, but Bernard told me to “trust the process” , and he was absolutely right. Race day was incredible. I finished in 13 hours and 36 minutes, and even now, I can’t quite believe I did it. Nutrition was spot on and everything came together as planned. Bernard cares about his clients and I truly believe his guidance made it not only possible for me to complete the race but made the journey enjoyable. I’ll always be grateful, and I continue to use his coaching services to this day”
